Fred M. Newmann

Dr. Fred M. Newmann, Emeritus Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, University of Wisconsin-Madison, directed the National Center on Organization and Restructuring Schools which generated the research base for this report. Prior to his research on general school reform, Newmann contributed to research and curriculum development in social studies and civic education. He retired from the University of Wisconsin in 2001.

M. Bruce King

Dr. M. Bruce King, Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis, University of Wisconsin-Madison, served as principal investigator with the Research Institute for Secondary School Reform for Youth with Disabilities and consultant to two studies in Australia which extended the research on Authentic Intellectual Work. His teaching, scholarship, and outreach concentrate on instructional reform, professional community, and school and district leadership.

Dana Carmichael

Dr. Dana Carmicahel, Executive Director for the Center for Authentic Intellectual Work, has been an educator for over 25 years domestically and abroad. She co-founded The Center for Authentic Intellectual Work with Fred Newmann and Bruce King in 2008 to support transformational change in educational reform based on the Framework for Authentic Intellectual Work.

The Center for Authentic Intellectual Work’s mission is to fundamentally transform the quality of student learning through teacher professional development by using the AIW framework to foster deep reflective practice—with profound respect for the work and for the people doing it. By offering resources and professional development for teachers and school administrators, the Center aims to help students from elementary through high school produce authentic intellectual work.
