Jerry Van Amerongen is the 2003 and 2005 winner of The Best Newspaper Cartoon Panel Of The Year Award by the National Cartoonists Society. Jerry’s cartoons have been in continuous syndication for nearly 35 years. Introduced in 1980, Van Amerongen’s cartoon panel The Neighborhood along with Gary Larson’s The Far Side helped redefine the newspaper single panel cartoon with short bursts of sophisticated surreal humor. Ballard Street is a rich continuation of Van Amerongen’s singular humor.
Jerry Van Amerongen
Jerry Van Amerongen is a two time winner of The Best Newspaper Cartoon Panel Of The Year Award by the National Cartoonist Society. His cartoons have been in continuous syndication for over 34 years. 13 book collections, countless greeting cards, calendars, many other licensed products, and now the internet have created a large and loyal following.
Jerry spent the first 17 years of his professional life in corporate sales, marketing and product management, coming to cartooning at the age of 40. His cartoon ideas come from scribbles and “thumb nail” sketches as often as they do from preconceived ideas. Each deftly designed panel relies on facial expressions and body language to give us additional information beyond the caption, providing motivation for the action of the characters.
Jerry Van Amerongen was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Boyhood memories shaped by the ethnic influences of his Dutch and Polish heritage, images of roly-poly women in print dresses and big men in baggy trousers shape the look of his characters. Jerry lives in Minnesota with his wife Linda.
